Being a college student presents many blessings: increased freedom, seemingly endless opportunities, and the ability to define yourself as a person. Unfortunately, this is a double-edged sword, as increased uncertainty and transitions challenge support networks, routines, and well-being.
It is sad to bring this as our first "Thoughtful Thursday", but suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among college students. In order to combat this, let's arm ourselves with the tools to help students who are in distress for any reason. Fortunately, thanks to an amazing interactive training program by Kognito, 30-45 minutes of your time today could help significantly.
I want to thank UHS and specifically Valerie (Kowis) Donovan, the Suicide Prevention Coordinator, for making this training available for UW students.
When you've completed the short training, without sharing any details about a situation or person, comment on one of the following:
- What surprised you about the training?
- What were a few takeaways to help identify friends who are at-risk?
- What are the ways you learned to have a tough conversation?
- What resources are available on campus for students in distress?
