Active Learning & Note-Taking

Happy Monday everybody! Here are some tips to share with your students & mentees about active learning and note-taking that you created during training. As these are crucial skills for successful students, make sure to share them with your mentees & students, and review them yourself! Have a great week! Lastly, make sure to read your manual as there are a ton of study skills in there (and share them with your students!).  Stay tuned for Tuesday’s tips on Time Management Skills and Exam Prep!  






Active Learning Tips:

  • Ask questions in lecture
  • Review notes after class with another student
  • Try to make connections – students in your class, section, study groups
  • Spread out work to keep your mind always thinking
  • Meet your professor/TA if you have a question…
  • Join learning group (CLC, PLC, etc)
  • Turn off your phone during lecture – make sure you are paying attention
  • Find the study methods that work best for you
  • Change your study methods – maybe you’ll find a different one
  • Study alone or with a group
  • Explain concepts to a friend or teach a concept to your study group
  • If you’re on your computer, stay away from social media (there’s an app for that!
  • Make a questions while reading or in lecture
  • Can’t figure out how to do something? Try looking it up on YouTube
  • Identify real world applications
  • Make a study group
  • Quiz each other to stay thinking about the content
  • Pay attention in class
  • Be an active listener
  • Make sure to take notes – maybe color code or highlight parts that you’re unsure about & ask the professor later


Note-Taking Tips:

  • Color code by topic/idea
  • Go back after the lecture and supplement notes taken
  • Use symbols or abbreviations
  • Highlight key topics
  • Review with other students and compare notes
  • Use slides if provided / print them off before class
  • Print off other materials before class provided by the instructor
  • Make sure to write clear and concise notes
