Here’s the last set of ideas that you all created during orientation.
Test-taking skills! As it can be crucial to do well on a test, make sure to share these ideas with your students & don't forget your manuals!
- Write down your anxieties before an exam- what are you really worried about?
- Take a timed practice test (possibly in that room, or reserve a room in a library)
- Get enough sleep and don’t cram in one night
- Make sure you dress appropriately – Is it really hot in your classroom? Or is it freezing? You don’t want that distracting you during the test!
- Don’t spend too much time on 1 problem
- Don’t let other students in the class stress you out
- Try to view as a way to show what you’ve learned
- Outline essays prior to and during test – If you’re allowed scrap paper, this is a great way to write down things that you remember and want to write about
- Quick glance through the exam- Have an idea during the first few minutes what you need to accomplish within the time limit
- Stay calm + confident
- Make sure you studied ahead of time!
- Go through some of the questions you know first
- Process of elimination when guessing on questions you don’t know
- Have some gum or a mint – sugar helps
- Count pages, prep for length
- Identify Rabbit hole problems or questions
- Don’t pull all-nighters.
- Remember to breathe!
I feel that starting early is very important. It leaves you sufficient time to prepare for unexpected incidents and to review materials that you later find important during study. I also want to add one tip from my own experience, which is to make plans and stick to them. It gives you a feeling of control and pushes you to think what you need to know for an exam.
