Do you or your students feel in a study rut? It's common to feel that way, especially around this time of the semester. We could all benefit from different types of studying and practice!
The Lead Academic Mentors are reading the book "Make It Stick" which discusses several types of practice that will boost comprehension and recall. Here are four new strategies that we designed to use these different types of practice. Try them out in your sessions, and let us know in the comments how they worked out!

I previously implemented the "spaced practice" technique in my mentoring sessions. The fist meeting we spent discussing topics covered that week in lecture. Then, during the following meeting, I quizzed my student on what we talked about. Its a great way to see what material was retained and what material we might want to go over again.
ReplyDeleteLast session, I asked my students to come up with 10 words they wanted to be quizzed on (definitions, processes, applications etc.) in order to prepare them for their upcoming exam. I plan on putting them in a bingo board where each word is in a numbered square. I plan on calling out numbers and having them give me a definition of the word/as much information about each term as possible. The bingo game I made up sounds a lot like subject bingo! How fun!
